Un poderoso y acaudalado empresario pone en marcha una compañía naviera con la adquisición de un barco de primera generación. Su único competidor, un viejo navío regido por un caótico y desordenado capitán, cae rápidamente en el abandono de la población local, entusiasmada con el nuevo vapor. Días más tarde llega a la ciudad un muchacho soñador y ensimismado que resulta ser el hijo del viejo capitán. No se han visto en décadas y poco a poco tratarán de entablar una relación paterno-filial difícil de conciliar. El muchacho es un extravagante bohemio, mientras que el padre espera de él tener la capacidad de
mejorar la empresa familiar. El amor terminará por desbaratar, como tantas veces, los planes pragmáticos de ambos empresarios.

A wealthy entrepreneur sets up a new shipping company with a luxurious new riverboat. His only rival, an old paddleboat run by a hardened old captain which has seen better days, is soon abandoned by the locals who prefer the new steamboat. Days later the captain’s son, who he hasn’t seen since he was a young boy, arrives to help out but he turns out to be an artsy daydreamer. Little by little they try to negotiate their very difficult father-son relationship. The young man is a bohemian, while the father expects him to take over the family business. But, as usual, love ends up upsetting the best-laid plans of both the grizzled
old captain and the wealthy entrepreneur.

Tras haber molido su saco de harina, un hombre sale de un gran molino que gira constante y con fuerza; camina tranquilo hasta que choca con otro paisano que se dirige hacia la misma estructura de grandes aspas. Comienza entonces una hilarante pelea de sacos que termina con ambos agricultores embadurnados de blanco. Una de las primeras películas de la historia del cine, en la que el chiste y la fascinación por la imagen se combinan a la perfección.

After milling his sack of flour, a man comes out of a big windmill whose large sails are turning constantly at great speed; as he walks away he bumps into a chimney sweep carrying a sack of soot who is heading towards the mill. The two start fighting with their respective sacks until the miller is covered with soot and the chimney sweep is covered with flour. One of the first films in the history of cinema, it is a seamless fusion of comedy and a fascination
with the visual image.
